About us,
Busybike was founded in 2012 by owner Wibe Graafsma.
Wibe grew up in a cycling family. All transportation was by bicycle or public transport. During the long holidays, they went on cycling trips to youth hostels throughout the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany.
At one point, his parents bought a tandem bike so they could keep up with their three children (aged 10, 12, and 13) on these trips.
From the age of 8, Wibe built his own cross bikes, which he used to ride through the mud on construction sites near their home in Beuningen. He would put on his rain gear and come home covered in mud. It was wonderful. Later, he built a sidecar step, a tandem step, bicycles with motorbike wheels (the first fat bike), and later also homemade recumbent bicycles.
Around 2010, Wibe began a search to find the ideal cargo bike for the handyman business he was running at the time. He didn't do things by halves: trips to Copenhagen (Nihola, Bullitt, and Omnium), Berlin (Workbikes), Vienna (MCS Trucks), Amsterdam (Workcycles), Belgium (Douze Cycles), and Milan (Bicicapace).
Ultimately, the first cargo bike was an electric tricycle from De Fietsfabriek. After two years, this three-wheeler was traded in for a two-wheeled Workcycles Fr8 with a heavy-duty motor with high pulling power.
Wibe then built a single-wheel trailer that could carry up to 60 kg of luggage. It was a wonderfully maneuverable combination that could even be used for jobs further away.
At the end of 2011, Wibe saw Urban Arrow at a trade fair in Utrecht. A lively conversation ensued between Wibe and one of the then owners of Urban Arrow. Within two weeks, the decision was made: a cargo bike shop would be opened.
Preliminary research had already been done. A company name still had to be chosen. Contacts had been made. By March 2012, the website was ready and the brands had been approached. Busybike was a reality.
Busybike started in 2012 with the following brands:
Urban Arrow, Nihola, Omnium, Onderwater-tandem, Workcycles, Douze-Cycles, De Fietsfabriek (cargo bikes and longtails), and Velonom (longtails).
In 2015, Bullitt was added as a brand, and in 2016, the brand Bakfiets.nl was also added.
Since 2020, we have also been carrying two German brands: Chike-kids, a tiltable tricycle since 2020, and Muli, the most compact cargo bike on the market, since 2023.
The period between 2012 and 2019 was essentially the initial phase of the electric cargo bike in the market. There was a lot of experimentation and countless possibilities were identified. During this period, Busybike developed and supplied various commercial products, primarily to Urban Arrow. Busybike built large transport boxes and (passive) cooling boxes that could be mounted on Urban Arrow's two-wheeled cargo bikes.
Busybike also developed a prototype of an active cooling box that could be cooled using solar cells. This box fit on a two-wheeled Urban Arrow Cargobike.
In addition, Busybike developed and produced large trailers between 2014 and 2022. These trailers are used throughout Europe. Our local bicycle courier in Nijmegen, Velocity, also has a number of them in use.
In order to focus more on the market, Busybike has decided to concentrate on the private market from 2021 onwards.
Large companies often require a different level of service (urgent deliveries and replacement transport), which other companies have been focusing on in recent years.
Busybike has been running this webshop since 2022, offering a wide range of parts for cargo bikes. Parts from our own brands are particularly well represented here.
We have stopped producing boxes for third parties and no longer build trailers.
However, since 2024, we have developed our own box for the Bullitt cargo bike. It is a spacious box that small business owners can use to transport their children and tools.
We also occasionally do custom work for building cargo bikes. This is mainly aimed at small business owners, to get them on the road at an affordable price.
Busybike is run for and by cyclists. All our people come to work by bike and all employees also have a transport bike. Currently: 2 Bullitts, 1 Bakfiets.nl Cargobike Long, and an original Maarten van Andel Bi-porteur.
From the very beginning, Wibe has tested and used various cargo bikes and transport bikes privately for long periods of time. You can only give an honest opinion about a bike if you have used it for a longer period of time.
From his home in Ooij, he took his two children to Nijmegen in the Urban Arrow. When the children started cycling themselves, the bikes became sportier.
The following bikes have been tested over a long period of time: De Fietsfabriek tricycle (2010–2012), Workcycles FR8 (2012–2016), Velonom Longtail (2014), Urban Arrow (2012–2020), Douze Longtail Longtail (2023), Omnium e-Cargo (2020-2025), and, starting in January 2026, a Bullitt.
