Our Urban Arrow rear wheels are hand-built and stronger than the original (already good) wheels from Urban Arrow.
The original Urban Arrow rear wheel was spoked with the Ryde Andra 40 rim until around 2021. This is a strong double-walled aluminum rim.
As the load capacity of many cargo bikes increased, other rims were developed on the market. RAD15 was the first to introduce the wider cargo rim for cargo bikes. Ryde quickly followed suit with the Andra 29 rim.
The RAD15 rim is stronger than the Andra 29 rim. The RAD15 rim is used by many courier companies in their Bullitts, Urban Arrows, and other heavy transport bikes.
Since around 2021, Urban Arrow has been delivering all their bikes with the Andra 29 rim. This rim is slightly wider than the Andra 29 rim. The wall thickness of the profile is also slightly thicker. This rim is better suited to the wider transport tires that have been manufactured in recent years. An example of this is the Schwalbe Pick-up tire (55-559).
The Andra 40 rim can crack on the inside after a few years if Schwalbe Pick-up tires (55 mm wide) are used. If these are inflated above 4 bar, excessive forces are exerted on the inside of the rim.
Our Andra 29 rear wheels (Etrto size 559) with Enviolo Heavy Duty hub are used in various cargo bikes on the market. Such as Urban Arrow, Bakfiets.nl, Lovens, Winora, Cargon, Cago.
So if you have a broken rear wheel from one of the other brands, our rear wheels are compatible and will fit.
FREEWHEEL ADAPTER:
Through 2023, all Enviolo wheels were supplied with a so-called clamping ring adapter. The sprocket and the Gates belt sprocket are slid over the adapter. For the chain sprocket, an aluminum ring is placed next to it, and then a clamping ring is clicked onto the adapter. This prevents the sprocket from sliding off the adapter.
Starting in early 2024, Enviolo began supplying a threaded freewheel adapter. A ring can be screwed onto this to secure the rear sprocket to the rear wheel. A special wrench is required for this installation.
Starting in late 2025, Enviolo will exclusively supply wheels with the threaded ring solution. We can install a clamping ring adapter if preferred.
ADVANTAGES OF THE THREADED RING ADAPTER:
The clamp ring adapter works perfectly with sprockets for standard steel chains. The rear sprocket remains securely mounted on the rear wheel. However, with Gates belt sprockets, the sprocket can sometimes push the clamp ring off the adapter. This causes the Gates sprocket to slip off the adapter.
First, you hear creaking noises. Then the bike keeps pedaling. This often damages the Gates sprocket and the freewheel adapter.
A screw ring adapter is a better solution if you have a Gates belt drive. However, a different (thinner) type of Gates sprocket must be installed. Otherwise, the screw ring will come into contact with the derailleur.
Both sprockets and adapters are shown below.
